Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon will be released in two parts on Netflix
Speaking with Variety, Netflix executive Ori Marmur discussed Rebel Moon, an upcoming sci-fi epic being created by Zack Snyder, and revealed some interesting news.
“Zack came in with so much passion,” Marmur said. “This is a film that he’s had in mind for decades. As you know, he’s spent so much time working on other people’s IP at other studios. We worked with him on Army of the Dead and we did things that others couldn’t do. We made a film and then a prequel and launched a live experience. With Rebel Moon, he wanted to push the envelope again. When we saw how big the world he created was, we thought it would be better served as two pieces versus one film. It’s the kind of story that can continue to grow. He thinks of it as his take on making something like Star Wars.”
Indeed, Rebel Moon began life as pitch Snyder made to Disney for a new Star Wars movie, so the comparison is apt. Part one of Rebel Moon will hit Netflix on December 22, 2023, with the follow-up date to be announced. Netflix released the first glimpses of Rebel Moon in a trailer for the streamer’s upcoming films:
The first part of Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon comes out this year
Netflix clearly has high hopes for Rebel Moon, and Snyder has said that he hopes it could be the start of a new cinematic universe.
To me, Rebel Moon sounds like it will play out like The Magnificent Seven, where a group of renegades have to get together to fight off a larger force of bad guys…only in space. According to Snyder, the plot involves the main character looking for soldiers to help her defend her village from an army trying to steal food from them.
The cast is stacked wtih actors known for playing badass roles in recent years, such as Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy), Michael Huissman (Game of Thrones), Ed Skrein (Deadpool) and Jena Malone (The Hunger Games), among others.
