Star Wars: The Bad Batch meets Indiana Jones in lackluster “Entombed”

The latest episode of Star Wars: The Bad Batch, “Entombed,” centers around an archaeological adventure reminiscent of Indiana Jones. It is unclear what implications the events of this episode will have on the larger story of The Bad Batch, which is again swept aside in favor of another filler-esque side mission. There were some interesting nods to old Star Wars lore, but this again seemed like a one-and-done episode.

The Treasure Hunt

The episode opens with Wrecker and Omega gathering supplies at a junk yard, where Omega finds what seems like an assortment of random junk. However, when they return to Cid’s bar, the pirate Phee takes a closer look at one of the items Omega finds and has her droid Mel scan the coordinates on it.

The item turns out to be a compass pointing to an unknown system called Kaldar Trinary, where the Bad Batch may find treasure. After some predictable reluctance on Hunter’s part, the group is persuaded by Omega to embark on the journey, as Phee says she’ll just go by herself if they don’t come.

The Planet

When they arrive, the planet is completely desolate and destroyed. Phee begins to fire Omega’s imagination with talk of adventuring and treasure hunting, much to Hunter’s chagrin. The compass then begins to make noise and guide them toward a mountain where the treasure is supposedly hidden. The group enters the mountain through a secret entrance, where they are met with a puzzle seemingly out of an Elder Scrolls game.

After coming across patterns inside the mountain, Phee says that the mountain may be the sight of Skara Nal, an artifact left behind by a group that predates the Jedi called the “Ancients.” After making their way past a few more traps and platforming sequences, the group is separated when a large creature attacks and caves in part of the hallway.

The Treasure is a…transformer?

Phee goes on about a rare crystalline stone that is apparently the key to an ancient power, and Tech confirms that the place they are walking through is very old. They eventually find the stone, which Phee grabs off of a pedestal, Raiders of the Lost Ark style. It then sends a beam of lightning through the ceiling, and the structure they are in emerges from the mountain and turns out to be a giant giraffe-like mech with a laser beam.

The mech fries Mel with its beam, and the team is eager to shut it down for fear of the mech destroying their ship. Tech theorizes that putting the stone back where it was will do the trick. Phee is reluctant, as the stone is worth a lot of money, but agrees because they would be trapped if their ship gets pulverized. They get the stone back into its original position, which self-destructs the mech.

Verdict

Well, this was unfortunately another filler episode. We have yet to explore what the heck the Bad Batch is planning to do other than these useless side quests that don’t get them anywhere. And unlike in the last episode, “Entombed” didn’t give us anything that could be followed up on in the future. Episode 204 at least foreshadowed Cid’s possible betrayal. Hopefully we get more of the other clones like Cody, Rex or Crosshair in next week’s episode because there hasn’t been much intrigue on this show lately.

Verdict: D+
