Recap and review: Vox Machina season 2, Episodes 4-6
Vox Machina Episode 206: “Into Rimecleft”
In the final episode for this week, our beloved Vox Machina party seeks out Osysa’s mate Kamaljiori.
There are some other major deviations from the Critical Role campaign’s here:
- The trial is to guess Kamaljiori’s name; this is where Grog impales Pike by accident.
- Once they get his name right, he tells them about more than one vestige.
- No dragon attack happens, and the party doesn’t split up while teleporting.
These changes were made for the sake of time and pacing, and I think it all works very nicely.
The animation on the show continues to amaze. There’s a lot of contrast between how the sphynx and dragons are animated vs the Vox Machina party itself, and it’s gorgeous.
Alright, let’s get to the heart of the episode: Scanlan overpowers a foe with his Bardic talents and charisma. The lyrics are so sweet, and it’s a really kind gesture to the sphinx, who cries and admits to feeling pain for the very first time. This reminds us that Scanlan does have a conscience under that suave front he presents all the time. Maybe we’ll get to see more of that throughout this season?
Grog is clearly struggling with Craven’s Edge. It keeps calling out to him, asking for more blood. Once he starts slashing Umbrasyl with it, we see an incredibly aggressive Grog, just like in the dream sequence in the beginning of the episode. And then his worst nightmare comes true: he stabs his best friend Pike. What will he do about Craven’s Edge now? Will he release himself from its influence or will he embrace it in return for amazing strength and power?
So now we’re left with our heroes split up. Grog, Scanlan, and Pike are nowhere to be seen, while Keyleth, Percy, Vex, and Vax find themselves…in the Fey Realm. This is fine.
There are six episodes out and six to go. Is it next Friday yet?
