SNL proves that Pedro Pascal should play Mario instead of Chris Pratt

A new Super Mario Bros. Movie is coming out in theaters on April 7. This animated adventure will star a rash of celebrity actors playing iconic denizens of the Mushroom Kingdom, including Christ Pratt as Mario himself.

The choice of Pratt was met with some skepticism. It’s not that people think he’ll be bad — he’s rarely less than fine — but more that the choice didn’t seem particularly imaginative. However he began his career, at this point Pratt has a reputation as a standard-issue funny leading man, as seen in stuff like the Guardians of the Galaxy series, the Jurassic World series, and the LEGO movies. Hollywood couldn’t have thought a little harder before picking up the phone to cast him?

The first trailers for the movie didn’t change opinions much. He doesn’t sound bad, exactly, just not terribly inspired, kind of expected, and possibly the weakest of the voices on display.

Pedro Pascal stars in trailer for a gritty Mario Kart HBO show

I’m sure the Super Mario Bros. Movie will come out in April and it’ll be big and flashy and fun and Chris Pratt will be decent and we’ll all forget this little debate. But until then, fans can’t help but wonder how things might been different.

And Saturday Night Live game them some ammo when host Pedro Pascal played Mario in a pre-recorded sketch: a fake trailer for a gritty reboot of Mario Kart that’s also a parody of Pascal new HBO series The Last of Us. Check it out below:

“Let’s a-go.” Would watch.

Twitter would rather Pedro Pascal play Mario over Chris Pratt

Once Twitter got a look at that sketch, the hot takes started flooding in:

And so on.

Again, I’m sure Pratt will be find in the Super Mario Bros. Movie, but this is a fun way to blow off some steam in the meantime.
