Vox Machina Episode 12: The Hope Devourer

The last episode of season 2 is beyond intense and perfectly sets up what’s to come in season 3.

Scanlan and Vax face the consequences of their decision to go inside a dragon (through its behind, no less) while Grog learns that free-falling from said dragon is not very fun. Vax finally embraces his status as Champion of the Matron of Ravens and reaches out to her while falling from the sky with an unconscious Scanlan.

We also see a shift in Vax’s attitude: he’s been a bit more certain of himself and his path ever since he emerged from the pool of blood in the Raven Queen’s temple last episode, which also helps Scanlan change his own outlook. Scanlan now has a sense of clarity when it comes to his priorities; he’s motivated to make things right with Kaylie.

“Screw your Matron! She doesn’t control my destiny!”

“No, Scanlan. You do. And you can run from it, but can rise to meet it.”

Scanlan chooses not to run. Instead, he slaughters Umbrasyl with Mythcarver, delivering the final deadly blow to Umbrasyl’s eye. This is the second giant-monster-eye-stab this season, if you’re counting. Good for you, Scanlan.

Umbrasyl is the second Chroma Conclave dragon to be slain by Vox Machina, leaving three dragons to be dealt with: Raishan, Vorugal, and Thordak.

Speaking of Raishan… What a surprise, eh? It’s unclear whether she’s been Keeper Yennen all along or if she’s just now disguised herself as her, but Raishan wants an alliance against Thordak. That’s consistent with the Critical Role campaign, although Raishan does not disguise herself as Yennen; in the campaign, Yennen is actually a man. This change makes sense for timing and pacing reasons, and will only make the plot more interesting as Vox Machina prepares to slay two of the last three chromatic dragons.

But first……… Dragon babies?!

So now we are left with Vox Machina getting ready to go after Vorugal and Thordak. Together, they have four Vestiges (Vax’s Deathwalker’s Ward armor, Vex’s bow Fenthras, Grog’s Titanstone Knuckles gauntlets, and Scanlan’s Mythcarver sword) and allies.

We saw a lot of character progression in this season: Grog finding the real source of his strength, Vax embracing his role as Champion of the Raven Queen, Keyleth finding out a little more about herself and mastering Fire. Percy and Vex have a soft spot for each other, as do Scanlan and Pike.

Vox Machina has come a long was a group as well as individually, and I cannot wait to see what season 3 holds for us.
