Doctor Who teases “impossible, logic-defying” new TARDIS set

Doctor Who is going through some exciting changes. We’ve got a new Doctor in Ncuti Gatwa, we’ve got the return of David Tennant, and now we have an “impossible, logic-defying” new TARDIS set to look forward to.

Oh, and before we talk about the new TARDIS set, let’s not forget that Doctor Who will be on Disney+ (outside of the United Kingdom and Ireland) starting with the 60th anniversary specials in November. Lots going on!

We will get to see the return of familiar faces come November, but there is one thing that will look very different: the TARDIS. It’s unclear if the new TARDIS will debut when Tennant comes back or with the introduction of Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor. Either way, executive producer Joel Collins hinted at some epic changes to the time-traveling phone booth in a recent interview with Doctor Who Magazine.

What will the new TARDIS set on Doctor Who look like?

“We talked through various concepts with Russel , and there was one rough idea that was just too ambitious, and too impossible – but which everybody loved,” Collins said. “Once I’d put it in front of Russell, he’s just too visually bright to unsee it. I’d go, ‘Yes, yes, but it’s completely mad, it’s never going to happen.’ Then we started to say, ‘OK, how do we make this impossible space possible?'”

"Phil [Sims, production designer] brought in a brilliant engineer, who spent months trying to solve the engineering riddle of this impossible, logic-defying set, which no one in their right mind should ever have even drawn in the first place. But that kind of sums up the show…"

It certainly does sum up the show! We’ve seen all kinds of wacky, unexplainable things happen in this series so I am not going to question what is going on here. Whatever wild ideas they have for the new TARDIS, I’m here for it! But we’ll have to wait until November to see exactly what they have in mind (or maybe longer than that, if they’re holding it until Gatwa arrives).

Disney bought the Doctor Who IP a while back. They’re pumping some extra money into the show, which could help with these impossible sets. I’m a bit on the fence about Disney potentially having a lot of creative control over the Doctor Who franchise because I’m not sure how much they can add to what is already an amazing franchise. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge Disney lover, but I’m still a bit nervous.

Disney, if you’re reading this, do not screw up Doctor Who for us, okay? We love it very, very much!

Doctor Who’s 60th-anniversary special is set to air in November 2023, with the new season to follow (probably) soon after in the new year.
