Slowly but surely, we’re making our way to the finale of The Last of Us season 1, and fans are already starting to wonder about the second season. The good news is that HBO has renewed their new big hit, but of course, we shouldn’t expect season 2 to come out anytime soon considering how long shows like this take to produce nowadays.
Because The Last of Us is based on an extremely popular video game that has a sequel, new fans of the story might’ve heard rumblings of what’s to come from friends or on social media. If you’re curious about some of the big plot points from the game and wonder when they might go down on the show, we can do a little explaining.
MAJOR spoilers ahead from The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part II follow
Viewers have gotten to know the main characters Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) pretty well over the last several weeks, and their relationship is without a doubt the best part of the show. But of course, as this is a post-apocalyptic story where the infected can (and do) pop up at any given time, Joel and Ellie are constantly in danger. Joel has a violent past and has survived the last 20 years, sure, but he’s getting older and there are more threats in the world than just the infected.
If you’ve been wondering whether or not Joel dies in The Last of Us games, you’ve come to the right place! We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but he does get killed in the games. In The Last of Us Part II, specifically.
How does Joel die in The Last of Us game?
Though Joel survives the first Last of Us game, he meets his fate in The Last of Us II at the hands of a character named Abby. We won’t get to meet her until the second season, but her storyline becomes important in the first even if we don’t realize it yet. Joel will kill her father at the end of season 1, a Firefly surgeon named Jerry, in order to save Ellie. In the second season, Abby will then avenge her father’s death and, sadly, kill Joel. I know, it’s terrible!
Joel’s death in The Last of Us Part II is the catalyst for the rest of the events in the game, as Ellie then seeks revenge against Abby.
Will Joel die in The Last of Us season 1?
The good news is we won’t have to watch Joel’s death in The Last of Us season 1. Showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have confirmed that the first season will cover the first game and the second will adapt The Last of Us Part II, so we have no reason to believe Joel will die in any of the upcoming episodes. For season 2, however, you’ve been warned! You think the episodes have been sad so far? Just wait until we have to say goodbye to Joel.
At least now if Joel has any near-death experiences in the remaining episodes of season 1, we’ll know he isn’t dying just yet.
New episodes of The Last of Us season 1 premiere every Sunday night on HBO and HBO Max, with the finale scheduled for March 12.
