Gabriel Luna has already “pitched a few ideas” for The Last of Us season 2
By Ashley Hurst
Before Gabriel Luna started filming the first season of The Last of Us, he was already trying to figure out where his character’s story went beyond that. As a huge fan of Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us video games, he couldn’t help himself. He’s even pitched a few of his ideas to show creators Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin.
Luna plays Joel’s brother Tommy, a former Firefly who now lives in Jackson, Wyoming with his wife Maria (Rutina Wesley), who is pregnant. In Episode 6, “Kin,” Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) arrive in Jackson and Joel reunites with Tommy. Meanwhile, Ellie learns more about Joel’s past, including the heartbreaking death of his daughter Sarah at the beginning of the outbreak.
Of course, if you’ve played the games, you’ll be well aware of how important Tommy’s role in the story becomes in The Last of Us: Part II. “When I played the games, I experienced the story as one big chunk, one unified story,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “So I was just as much prepping for Part II as I was for the work that was immediately on hand. I’m fully… Yeah, I’m ready.”
Gabriel Luna has pitched thing about Tommy he wants to explore in The Last of Us season 2
The show has already expanded the game’s story in several ways, from stretching out Bill’s (Nick Offerman) backstory to the inclusion of militia leader Kathleen (Melanie Lynskey). With the show officially returning for season 2, Luna has been pitching ideas about how Tommy’s story could evolve:
"I’ve pitched a few ideas to Craig and Neil about what we could explore, considering we can bubble out to certain pockets of the story that we don’t get to experience in the game. So we’ll see what they have in store, but I was ready before we shot the first frame of [season 1] for Part II. I’m excited to get into that work."
Without getting into spoiler territory, Tommy plays a significant role in the second game. Luna is such a big fan of the games the he even taught himself to play some iconic songs from the game on guitar. “I played that Pearl Jam number [Future Days] a few times on set when we were there,” he said. Ramsey, also a guitarist, would join in. “She’s just a phenomenal singer-songwriter,” Luna said. “She and I would jam.”
Playing guitar is another important part of The Last of Us Part II, so it’s great the actors have these skills! The Last of Us continues Sundays on HBO and HBO Max.
