Does Ellie die in The Last of Us?

Fans have quickly fallen in love with the two main characters from The Last of Us: the hardened survivor Joel (Pedro Pascal) and the precocious teen Ellie (Bella Ramsey), who have formed a father-daughter kind of relationship during their travels across a zombie-ridden United States.

We’re closing in on the end of the first season, and some fans are getting nervous. Joel is in bad shape, and without his protection Ellie could be in danger. Is she going to die in this final stretch? Beware SPOILERS ahead.

The good news is that no, Ellie will not die in the first season of The Last of Us. Nor does she die over the course of The Last of Us Part 2 video game from Naughty Dog, which HBO will adapt in seasons 2 and 3 of the show. Ellie will go through some horrible stuff, though, much of it courtesy of a character we haven’t met yet.

Who is Abby in The Last of Us?

Abby Anderson is a character introduced in The Last of Us Part 2. Without getting into explicit spoilers, she bears an enduring grudge against Joel, and it puts her at odds with Ellie. The two will exact brutal vengeance on each other over the course of the game, and presumably the next couple seasons of the HBO show.

Ellie does survive the entire story so far, but it comes at a very steep price. And who knows? If Naughty Dog ever decides to make The Last of Us Part 3, it’s possible her journey could end in death, and a network as bloodthirsty as HBO would have no problem following suit on the TV show.
