The Ron Perlman movies are long over. The David Harbour movie barely made a blip. Time to reboot Hellboy anew!
Alright, let’s try this again. The A.V. Club reports that Jack Kesy is the latest actor to take up the role of comic superhero Hellboy, a half-demon who works with the U.S. government to stop occult menaces. This is the second time Hollywood has tried to reboot Hellboy in five years, after the 2019 Hellboy movie starring Stranger Things’ David Harbour. Pretty much no one liked that movie, including Harbour, but why not give it another go, I guess?
And before that, Hellboy featured in a pair of movies from director Guillermo del Toro, played then by Ron Perlman. Of all the people to play the role on the big screen so far, Kesy has the lowest profile. He’s most known for his roles in Deadpool 2 and the comedy Claws.
The new Hellboy movie is called The Crooked Man, based on the Eisner Award-winning comic of the same name from 2008. Here’s the official description:
"Stranded in 1950s rural Appalachia, Hellboy and a rookie BPRD agent discover a small community haunted by witches, led by a local devil with a troubling connection to Hellboy’s past: the Crooked Man."
Sounds fun enough. There’s no released date for The Crooked Man as of yet.
Speaking as a guy who doesn’t read a lot of comics, I’m surprised that Hellboy has gotten so many chances on the big screen, since I don’t think of him as a marquee superhero like Batman or Superman. But I guess the original del Toro movies really made an impact on people.
