When Hugh Jackman reprises his iconic role as Wolveirne in Deadpool 3, he’ll have been playing the character for well over two decades. He first appeared as Wolverine back in 2000’s X-Men and went on to appear in nine movies total.
Playing Wolverine for so long has taken its toll on Jackman, but not in the way you might expect. Turns out, after many years of growling and shouting, his singing voice isn’t as good as it once was. If you’re not aware, when not tearing people to pieces as Wolverine, Jackson is a bit of a song and dance man.
According to Jackman, we have Logan to blame for that. “I’ve done some damage to my voice with Wolverine,” he told the BBC’s Front Row. “My falsetto is not as strong as it used to be and that I directly put down to some of the growling and yelling.”
"And my voice teacher at drama school would’ve been horrified by some of the things I did because we learned a technique of how to shout and how to yell without ruining your voice.During Wolverine, I did some screaming and yelling and things that I think did damage my voice. I work with a singing teacher [now] and I make sure that I try not to hurt myself. And I really put a lot of effort into both physical movement and my vocal preparation for every role."
Might this all be in vain? I can only imagine how much shouting there will be between Logan and Deadpool in the new movie. Apparently, they really “hate each other.”
Deadpool 3 is “very different” for Wolverine
Wolverine died in 2017’s Logan, right? How can he return in Deadpool 3? Well, as Marvel embraces the multiverse, all things are possible; look no further than Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s return as Spider-Man in No Way Home, or Patrick Stewart coming back as Professor X as Doctor Strange in the Multivere of Madness.
“It’s something very different to anything I’ve done before as Wolverine,” Jackman said. “I really thought I was done [but] I woke up one day; I remember it was August, it was my first day of vacation and I went, ‘I’m not done.’ It really came to me like that. Ryan [Reynolds] had been begging me for years to do something and I kept saying no. So I’m not sure he fully believed me [when I said yes to this].”
Deadpool 3 begins production this summer. Unlike the previous two installments in the franchise — which were firmly part of the X-Men universe — the third movie will take place in the all-encompassing MCU, which means we could get crossovers with other Marvel favorites! The movie is slated to premiere in November 2024.
