The newest episode of The Last of Us“When We Are in Need,” put Ellie and Joel through the wringer. Ellie was kidnapped by a violent cult leader and Joel recovered just enough from his stab wound to kill a bunch of dudes in his quest to rescue her. By the end of it, there was no question that these two are a team, not just a hardened survivalist and his “cargo.”

There’s only one episode left in The Last of Us season 1. Will it see Joel deliver Ellie to the Fireflies, who use her immunity to the cordyceps virus to create a cure before releasing her back into Joel’s care so the two can ride off into the sunset together? Maybe…but having watched the rest of the season, are you really expecting that happy and clean an ending?

You can watch the trailer for the season finale — “Look for the Light” — below:

When is The Last of Us finale?

The trailer doesn’t give much away, as well it mightn’t; this is the big finish and HBO doesn’t want to spoil things. That said, if you’ve played Naughty Dog’s 2013’s The Last of Us video game, you know this story doesn’t end wrapped with a neat bow on top. Assume crash positions, everyone.

The season 1 finale of The Last of Us airs on Sunday, March 12 at 9:00 p.m. EST/8 p.m. CST on HBO and HBO Max. The show has already been renewed for season 2, although we probably won’t see it for a while.

Next. The Last of Us Episode 8 is a horrifying survival story that changes everything. dark
