Tell me if this has happened to you: you’re in midair, flying on your dragon, on your way to a birthday party or a business meeting or other event. Your dragon spots a tasty sheep on the bluffs below and moves to land and consume it. Now you’re going to be late! You need to tell your dragon what to do, but they only respond to Valyrian commands and you’ve plumb forgotten them! Now you’re in a real pickle.
If you’re like most Americans, this has happened to you at least once, in your mind. But it needn’t happen again! HBO has put together a cute little video guide to some of the most common Valyrian commands, said aloud by some of your favorite members of the Targaryen royal family, including Princess Rhaenyra, Jacaerys Velaryon and Aemond Targaryen. Check it out below!
Learn how to train your dragon with Valyrian command words
If you’re interested, here’s a rundown of some of the most common Valyrian dragon commands:
- Dracarys = dragonfire
- Dohaeras = obey
- Kelis = halt
- Soves = fly
For those Westerosi linguists out there, “Dohaeras” seems to be the command form of “dohaeris,” as in “valar dohaeris,” which means “all men must serve.” That phrase was tossed around a lot on Game of Thrones, particularly during Arya Stark’s adventures in Braavos.
As for Game of Thrones prequel show House of the Dragon, that won’t return to HBO until 2024, whereupon we’ll hopefully learn some new Valyrian words we can use to startle and confuse the animals and loved ones in our lives.
