Warrior Nun showrunner encourages fans to keep fighting for the show
By Dan Selcke
Based on the comic by Ben Dunn, the Netflix show Warrior Nun follows Ava Silva (Alba Baptista), a girl who wakes up in a morgue to find that she has special powers. She’s thrown into battle against demons and other powerful forces, all of them fighting for a precious artifact that she possesses.
The second season of the show premiered last November, and while it racked up tens of millions of viewing hours, it fell short of the threshold Netflix needed to renew it. Fans were not pleased, but showrunner Simon Barry seemed to make peace with the cancelation, and we expected to add Warrior Nun to the list of shows canceled before their time.
But fans kept up the pressure, talking the show up on Twitter and even taking out billboards across the street from Netflix headquarters. Barry noticed and seemed to get a second wind; maybe the show could be saved after all?
Warrior Nun showrunner still has hopes of revival
It’s not crazy to think that shows can be revived nowadays; Netflix itself made major waves when it brought back Arrested Development in 2013, years after the sitcom had been canceled by Fox. But support for Warrior Nun may be flagging, which could be why Barry took to Twitter to share some words of encouragement:
Will that be enough to push Warrior Nun over the edge? Will another spate of fan campaigning get the show picked up at HBO Max, Hulu, Paramount+ or elsewhere? Maybe…
…but maybe not. With belts tightening and studios a little less willing than they once were to spend large sums of money on unproven ideas, the days of revivals left and right may be over. But here’s hoping Warrior Nun will get another shot anyway.
