The X-Files wrapped up its original run back in 2002, but its influence is still being felt to this day. From Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Lost to Fringe to Supernatural and all of their progeny, any sci-fi/fantasy show where the heroes fight monsters of the week or grapple with mysteries and conspiracies owes something to Chris Carter’s creation. Vince Gilligan, the man behind Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, broke out as a writer on The X-Files. The show helped genre series look more respectable in the eyes of the masses, laying the groundwork for stuff like Game of Thrones and The Last of Us. The roots go deep on this one.

The X-Files has had a few comebacks over the years, with Fox airing two seasons featuring the alien-hunting Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) in 2016 and 2018. But we’re now looking at a wholly different sort of beast. Speaking on the podcast On The Coast With Gloria MacarenkoThe X-Files creator Chris Carter said there may be a reboot in the works from one of the hottest names in Hollywood right now.

“We’re so steeped in conspiracies now. The X-Files dealt with a central conspiracy, but now the world is so full of conspiracies that I think it would be a different show,” Carter mused before dropping the bombshell: “Actually, I just spoke to a young man, Ryan Coogler, who is going to remount The X-Files with a diverse cast. So he’s got his work cut out for him, because we covered so much territory.”

Black Panther director Ryan Coogler rebooting The X-Files?

Ryan Coogler, of course, is the director of both Black Panther movies, as well as 2015’s Creed and 2013’s Fruitvale Station. I would definitely be curious to see his take on The X-Files. It’s unclear whether it would be a hard reboot or just feature some new agents uncovering sinister conspiracies. If it’s the latter, Mulder and Scully could conceivably show up for cameos.

Carter is also right that our thinking about conspiracies has changed since the original show premiered in 1993. That was long before Pizzagate or QAnon or 9-11 truther types. How do you cut through all that nonsense and get to what really matters: little green men controlling the government?
