Watch the new trailer for Marvel’s Secret Invasion!
By Daniel Roman
The marketing machine for Marvel’s next upcoming Disney+ show Secret Invasion is now in full swing. A brand new trailer for the series arrived over the weekend, hinting at the conflicts and characters we’re likely to see in the show. The political spy thriller vibes are strong in this one, recalling earlier Marvel projects like Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Check it out, then we’ll discuss:
Nick Fury prepares for one last fight in new trailer for Marvel’s Secret Invasion
Discussions abound for the past few months about “superhero fatigue,” and whether Marvel was spreading themselves too thin with the sheer amount of content they’ve been pumping onto parent company Disney’s streaming platform. And while these sorts of narratives can fly around the media and Twitter, apparently it was enough of an internal concern at Marvel Studios that head honcho Kevin Feige recently announced they would be dialing back the number of shows they did per year, in order to allow each enough time to shine.
We’re really hoping that works out to Secret Invasion’s benefit, because even by Marvel’s lofty standards this one feels special. The trailer hypes up the return of Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury, who was last seen heading into space with a shapeshifting alien race called the Skrulls at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home. Fury was attempting to find the Skrulls a new home, as well as taking some much-needed time away from Earth following the traumatic events of Avengers Infinity War and Endgame. Apparently that hasn’t worked out well.
In Secret Invasion, a radical faction of Skrulls living on Earth has decided to take matters into their own hands, infiltrating key positions of power in order to force a planetary takeover. This forces Fury to come back to set things right. We’ll also see the return of his Skrull ally Talos (Ben Mendohlson), as well as appearances by Agent Ross (Martin Freeman) and Rhodey/War Machine (Don Cheadle). Emilia Clarke and Olivia Colman also both make their debuts in the MCU alongside Kingsley Ben-Adir, who plays the Skrull villain Gravik.
Secret Invasion premieres June 21 on Disney+.
