Henry Cavill’s final scene in The Witcher reportedly revealed
By Daniel Roman
The third season of Netflix’s monster-hunting fantasy show The Witcher is due out this summer, and new details are emerging. The Witcher has had its ups and downs, but there’s a different sort of pressure looming ahead of season 3 thanks to the departure of Henry Cavill, who plays the titular witcher Geralt of Rivia. News of Cavill’s exit shocked fans last year, since he’s essentially the face of the show and his performance is by far the most universally praised aspect of the production.
Geralt will be played by Liam Hemsworth starting in season 4, but in the meantime we have one last outing with Cavill to look forward to. Showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich has teased a “heroic sendoff” for Cavill’s Geralt, but how exactly will the show handle his curtain call?
Thanks to reliable Witcher fansite Redanian Intelligence, we may have an idea of what Cavill’s final scene as Geralt of Rivia will entail. A warning that there may be SPOILERS below for The Witcher season 3.
Geralt will turn his back on being a witcher in season 4
According to RI’s anonymous sources, Cavill’s final scene as Geralt will see him turning his back on being a witcher. Here’s their description of the scene:
"We’ve learned that Henry Cavill‘s final scene as Geralt of Rivia will be him giving up being a witcher. A supporting character will call for him, yelling “Witcher!“, to which Geralt will answer: “No, no more,” implying that he no longer considers himself a witcher now."
If true, this is a fascinating development. On the one hand, it does line up with Geralt’s overall trajectory in Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher novels, which sees Geralt set aside his witcherly obligations to go on a long journey to find Ciri in the latter half of the series. There’s one scene in particular during the penultimate book The Tower of Swallows where Geralt reflects on this choice as he watches his witcher medallion melt in a fire. So in that sense, this seems faithful.
On the other hand, season 3 is largely adapting the book The Time of Contempt, which is set much earlier. Without delving too deep into spoiler territory, let’s just say that that particular book ends with Geralt in such a precarious position that he wouldn’t be able to articulate these ideas the way he seems to in this scene. It seems safer than ever to expect that season 3 will continue the show’s track record for making sweeping changes to the source material.
We’ll see how Cavill’s departure plays out when The Witcher season 3 premieres on Netflix sometime this summer.
