Donald Glover talking to Lucasfilm about playing Lando again
So, get this. Remember how Solo: A Star Wars Story came out in 2018 and didn’t really do as well as Disney and Lucasfilm had hoped? Well, apparently, there were talks of a spin-off centered around a younger Lando Calrissian — played in the movie by Donald Glover — shortly after the movie came out, but we never got an official announcement. Many people assumed that the project was scrapped after the not-so-great performance of the movie.
But guess what? It looks like we might not have seen the last of Donald Glover’s portrayal of the smooth-talking scoundrel after all.
In a recent interview with GQ, Glover (who performs music under the name Childish Gambino) confirmed that he’s still in talks about how to bring Lando back. He said that he’d love to reprise the role, but only if there’s a good reason to do so. Unfortunately, he couldn’t say much more about it, joking that Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy might “hunt him down” if he spilled any secrets.
But there’s a chance we might learn more about this at Star Wars Celebration London this weekend. It’s all pretty exciting, especially for fans of the charming space-swindler. Who knows, maybe we’ll finally get the Lando spin-off we’ve been waiting for.
How Qi’ra’s story ends in the Star Wars comics
If we do get a Lando spinoff, we might also get the return of Qi’ra, the character played in Solo by Game of Thrones veteran Emilia Clarke. Qi’ra was a childhood friend of Han Solo’s, but by the end of the movie it was revealed that she was working with a criminal syndicate called the Crimson Dawn.
And if we don’t ever see Qi’ra again, a series of Star Wars comics have revealed what happened to her. In the comics, she goes on to become the leader of Crimson Dawn. But she has good motives: she uses her influence to try and take down Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine. She fails in her mission and has to go into hiding, but does live to see the Empire fall.
Qi’ra’s story seems to come to an end in Star Wars: Hidden Empire #5, which is on comic book store shelves now. Granted, Lucasfilm isn’t honor-bound to adapt any of this is they want to bring Qi’ra back in live-action, but it’s there as a resource.
