6 plotlines to remember for The Last Kingdom movie Seven Kings Must Die
By Daniel Roman
4. The children of Uhtred: Oswald and Stiorra
Given that The Last Kingdom has centered so much around the idea of succession for various kingdoms, it’ll be good to brush up on where Uhtred’s own children were at the end of season 5. By this point in the series, Uhtred has three kids: Oswald (also referred to as Young Uhtred), Stiorra, and Osbert. All three of these children are from Uhtred’s marriage to Lady Gisela, which we saw in seasons 2 and 3.
Both Oswald and Stiorra featured prominently in season 5. Oswald is a priest and was castrated by Brida early in the season as revenge against Uhtred. He survived and went on to fight in the Battle at Bebbanburg. Though he was captured by King Constantin, Uhtred negotiates Oswald’s release. At the end of the series, the two are reunited at Bebbanburg.
The same is true of Stiorra, Uhtred’s oldest daughter. She was married to the Danish lord of Eoforwic (York), Sigtryggr. Season 5 explored Sigtryggr’s conflict with King Edward, which culminated in a horrific moment where Uhtred was forced to execute his son-in-law while Stiorra watched. She ultimately went on to kill Brida when Uhtred couldn’t, ending the blood feud which had caused so much pain to their family.
As with Oswald, Stiorra and her Danish followers showed up at the Battle of Bebbanburg to help Uhtred fight his way to victory. She was present at the final celebration.
5. Osbert, the lost son returned
The youngest of Uhtred’s children is named Osbert, and we’re expecting to see a lot more of him in Seven Kings Must Die. Osbert appeared briefly in The Last Kingdom season 3 as a baby, when his mother Gisela died giving birth to him. Following Uhtred’s banishment by King Alfred, Osbert all but vanished from the series.
That all changed in the season 5 finale, when we discovered that Uhtred’s warrior nun friend Hild had been watching over Osbert. One of the final moments in the series finale shows her leading Osbert to Bebbanburg. We don’t see him reunite with his father int he finale, but surely the movie has to address that somehow!
6. The state of England and its petty kingdoms
There are two major plot threads which have run through the entirety of The Last Kingdom: Uhtred’s quest to reclaim his ancestral home of Bebbanburg and King Alfred’s dream of uniting the petty kingdoms of England under one banner. Since Uhtred reclaimed Bebbanburg in season 5, we’re fully expecting Seven Kings Must Die to deal more with the unification of England.
As such, it’s a good idea to brush up on the lay of the land before diving into the movie. As of the end of season 5, King Edward controls Wessex, Mercia and East Anglia. With Sigtriggyr dead, Uhtred stands as the most powerful lord in Northumbria; we don’t know for sure if there are others he’s sharing the responsibility with, but we can assume he’s probably holding down the fort for the last kingdom.
Beyond the big four kingdoms, there are plenty of other smaller kingdoms which have yet to fall under Edward’s rule, such as Wales, Scotland and Orkney. As of the end of season 5, those kingdoms are all still independent. We don’t know for sure which of those independent kingdoms will feature in Seven Kings Must Die, but we’re sure they’ll be important to the story.
