Marvel reportedly isn’t talking about replacing Jonathan Majors in the MCU
By Dan Selcke
Jonathan Majors is one of the biggest rising stars working in Hollywood right now, having starred in two major movies just over the past few months: Creed III and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. His Quantumania role is especially important: he plays Kang, who is set to be the next major villain of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. An upcoming Avengers movie is even subtitled The Kang Dynasty. Majors has also already filmed his parts as Kang in the upcoming second season of Loki on Disney+.
Then, a few weeks ago, Majors was arrested in New York on domestic violence allegations. The victim, a 30-year-old woman, was taken to the hospital with “minor injuries to her head and neck,” according to authorities. Majors has since been charged with multiple counts of harassment and assault; he is due in court on May 8.
Majors’ criminal defense attorney Priya Chaudhry maintains that Majors is “completely innocent and is probably the victim of an altercation with a woman he knows.” Chaundhry says that “evidence includes video footage from the vehicle where this episode took place, witness testimony from the driver and others who both saw and heard the episode, and most importantly, two written statements from the woman recanting these allegations.”
Chaundhry also released a set of text messages to the press where the unnamed victor takes the blame for what happened: “Please let me know you’re okay when you get this. They assured me that you won’t be charged. They said they had to arrest you as protocol when they saw the injuries on me and they knew we had a fight. I’m so angry that they did. And I’m sorry you’re in this position. Will make sure nothing happens about this. I told them it was my fault for trying to grab your phone. I only just got out of hospital. Just call me when you’re out. I love you.”
There have been “zero conversations” within Marvel about dropping Jonathan Majors
After the incident, Majors has been dropped by both his talent manager Entertainment 360 and his PR firm The Lede Company. However, according to sources at Deadline, which is among the most reliable industry sources around, there have been “zero conversations” within Marvel about booting Majors out of the MCU.
That could change, possibly depending on the results of the legal case against Majors. In any case, Disney has some time to decide what to do, since The Avengers: The Kang Dynasty isn’t due out in theaters until 2025.
