Paramount+ working on a Galaxy Quest TV show

Galaxy Quest is a 1999 movie starring Tim Allen, Alan Rickman, Sigourney Weaver and others as the aging cast of a Star Trek-like sci-fi series still beloved by fans years after its cancelation. A group of actual space aliens sees the show, mistakes the cast for their characters, and recruits them to fight in an actual high stakes battle against an evil space tyrant, something they are hilariously ill-equipped to do.

The original movie is fun and snappy and still has fans to this day. A few years back, Amazon was planning a sequel that would reunite the original cast, but that was put on hold after Rickman’s death in 2016. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount+ is reviving the project.

It’s unclear if this new Galaxy Quest TV show is a sequel or a re-do of the original movie with a new group of actors. Mark Johnson, an executive producer on the original film who also worked on Breaking Bad, is developing the new show. Paramount+ is also on the hunt for a writer.

New Galaxy Quest show being developed at Paramount+

Paramount+ is the home of all things Star Trek. Even as we speak, the series finale of Star Trek: Picard is around the corner. Then there’s Star Trek:  DiscoveryStar Trek: Prodigy, Strange New WorldsLower Decks, a show about Starfleet Academy on the way and a movie about Section 31 starring Michelle Yeoh just announced. If you’re gonna have a Star Trek parody, Paramount+ is the place to have it.

Meanwhile, Hulu has The Orville, a show that started out as a Star Trek parody and eventually morphed into just…Star Trek, but it’s called The Orville. Over on Netflix, there are serious shades of Star Trek in Black Mirror.

So yeah, Trek is everywhere. What’s another riff?
