J. Michael Straczynski: Babylon 5 animated movie is finished, on the way

Filmmaker and writer J. Michael Straczynski first brought Babylon 5 to the small screen way back in 1993. The sci-fi show was set aboard a space station where members of the human military interacted with alien diplomats, the lot of them dealing with everything from culture clashes to violent interstellar wars. The series was conceived as a long story where every episode was a chapter; that’s standard practice now, but it was a big leap back in the day when episodes of TV usually stood on their own and everything returned to the status quo by the end of the hour.

Straczynski wrote almost every episode of Babylon 5 and has remained close to the series ever since it went off the air in 1998. For a while, we heard about him rebooting the show for The CW…but then The CW came under new management and started canceling pretty much all of its original programming, so it’s unclear if that’s going to come to fruition.

But there are new Babylon 5 projects coming into being. Straczynski revealed just today that not only has he written a new Babylon 5 animated movie, but that it’s finished and “coming out very soon”:

New Babylon 5 movie is “a love letter to the fans”

We don’t know what the movie is about nor when it will release, but Straczynski sounds very excited by the whole thing:

Straczynski always seemed like he had a genuine love this series, so it’s cool to see him still at it. Expect details about plot and release date to come soon; I expect this may be released on
