Next month, The Walking Dead franchise will premiere what looks like the coolest, most epic thing we’ve seen from them in many years. Spinoff show Dead City sees enemies-turned-allies Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) travel to zombie-infested Manhattan in search of Maggie’s son Hershel, who has been kidnapped.

Dead City is the first in a slate of Walking Dead spinoffs on the way. Other shows on the horizon include a Daryl Dixon series where Daryl goes to France. And of course, Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) are returning for their own miniseries.

In the meantime, we finally have a full trailer for Dead City! Take a look:

One of the big questions regarding this series is why Maggie choose Negan to help her. Now we learn that he has history with Hershel’s kidnapper. “The man who’s got Hershel,” Maggie tells Negan. “You know him.” I think the obvious answer is that the kidnapper is a former member of Negan’s Saviors, but we’ll have to wait and see.

The official synopsis of the show reads, “The Walking Dead: Dead City follows the popular Maggie (Cohan) and Negan (Morgan) characters traveling into a post-apocalyptic Manhattan, long ago cut off from the mainland. The crumbling city is filled with the dead and denizens who have made New York City their own world full of anarchy, danger, beauty, and terror.”

Dead City is The Walking Dead “like we’ve never seen it before”

Throughout most of the main series, our main characters lived in the forests of Georgia, far away from big cities. However, in Dead City, Maggie and Negan have no choice to go to one of the biggest population centers on Earth. Prepare for a huge post-apocalyptic culture shock.

“It’s The Walking Dead like we’ve never seen it before. We haven’t really lived in a city like this.” showrunner Eli Jorné said earlier this year. “It’s New York; there’s skyscrapers up to the sky and a million and a half walkers. And for characters like Maggie and Negan, who’ve been running through the woods for a long time, it’s just a whole new world that’s just extremely claustrophobic, scary, and also, as you’ll discover, has pockets of survivors, you’ll get to see all the strange new ways they live in the apocalypse, it’s definitely like nothing you’ve seen before.”

After many seasons in a same setting, a show like this is exactly what The Walking Dead Universe needs to spice things up. We can’t wait! The Walking Dead: Dead City premieres June 18 on AMC and AMC+.
