Jason Isaacs (Lucius Malfoy) “can’t wait” to see Max’s new Harry Potter show

Warner Bros. Discovery’s new streaming service Max, formerly known as HBO Max, is swinging big by announcing a new Harry Potter TV show. That means an all-new cast of actors playing Harry, Hermione and all the rest. It’s a big job. Who could do as good a job as Robbie Coltrane did as Hagrid in the movies? Or Ralph Fiennes as Voldemort?

Speaking to ComicBook about his new movie The Mother, actor Joseph Fiennes (brother of Ralph) weighed in on whether he’d be willing to follow in his brother’s footsteps and join the reboot. “You know I’m trying to find that piece of makeup and that eye thing again, maybe I need that for an audition. I don’t know,” he said. “I just heard that recently and it’s great. It feels like it was only yesterday. I don’t know why we have to reinvent everything. But, I guess this is what happens.”

While Fiennes is wary on the idea of retelling a story that already has a beloved movie adaptation, he sees potential in doing it as a TV show. “The structure of television now, it’s so brilliant and sophisticated, and the map is just wide open,” he said. “It allows that material to be re-examined and take the viewers in a different direction or open up pockets that they wouldn’t have imagined they would have the time to see in a cinema. So I think, actually, television’s really exciting in that way.”

Jason Isaacs (Lucius Malfoy) understands the need for a Harry Potter reboot

The Harry Potter show will give us more time to explore the Wizarding World. Although the movies were terrific, they didn’t fit in everything from J.K. Rowling’s books. Jason Isaacs, who played Lucius Malfoy in the original Harry Potter movies, believes that a show can expand the story. “It’s no weirder for me than for everybody else who’s seen the films. I happen to be in the films too. They make a new Spider-Man every 15 minutes,” he told Radio Times.

"You know, there was a ton of stuff in the books that we left out… Yeah it’s an odd feeling, but it’s no odder for me than it is anyone else. I can’t wait to see them and see what they do."

Despite many Harry Potter fans promising to avoid the new series, any project set in the Wizarding World is going to find success. Look no further than Hogwarts: Legacy, the video game currently flying off shelves across the world.

The upcoming TV series doesn’t have a release date yet. These are still early days; expect it to air sometime in 2025 or 2026.
