10. The execution of Ned Stark

The first season of Game of Thrones came out of the gate strong, but it didn’t really start getting talked about until they they chopped off Ned Stark’s neck in front of his daughters, gods and everybody. On top of shocking an entire fandom who thought Ned Stark will end up in the Iron Throne, the moment added to the ongoing joke about Sean Bean dying in everything he does.

It also started a trend where the ninth episode of every Game of Thrones season became a bloody, traumatizing extravaganza. The moment is widely regarded as THE scene that started the obsession among fans.

9. “The things I do for love”

Speaking of beginnings, the last scene of the pilot episode made everyone made everyone at home sit straight up: Jaime Lannister pushes the 10-year-old Bran Stark out of a tower window after the boy sees him and his twin sister Cersei having sex. The scene foreshadows all the times in the future that Game of Thrones would subvert our expectatons.

It was the show’s very first moment of unsuspected brutality. It also began a huge character for Jaime Lannister, who changes markedly throughout the series. But he always stayed true to his famous words, for better or worse: “The things I do for love.”
