11 sci-fi/ fantasy shows and movies to watch in June
By Dan Selcke
If you’re a fan of sci-fi and fantasy shows, May was a pretty quiet month for you. There was nary a Star War nor superhero in sight, no one with a sword trying to kill a dragon, no one trying to fight their way out of a computer simulation or travel through time or anything. It was weak.
But it’s over now. For June, the people who run the entertainment industry got together and decided to bombard us with shows and movies about zombies, space travel, elves and more, and we’re here for it. Here are 11 of the biggest genre shows and movies coming out this month. It’s gonna get busy:
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse: June 2
June has barely begun and there’s already something worth seeing: Across the Spider-Verse, the sequel to 2018’s dizzyingly inventive Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, is out now in theaters, and it’s a blast.
The new movie picks up with teenage Spider-Man Miles Morales a couple years into his superhero career, when he has to deal with the repercussions of all that universe-hopping he did back when. The movie introduces new characters and a new story, but still has the same innovative spirit and wild visual sense that made the first such a hit.
The multiverse is all the rage right now among superhero franchises, and these movies are some of the few to get the concept completely right.
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (June 9)
The long-running franchise about robots that turn into things that aren’t strictly robots continues in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. Also the robot shape-shifters are aliens. The new movie still features favorites like Optimus Prime and the Autobots, but also new sets of Transformers like the the Maximals, Predacons and Terrorcons, who are involved in a three-way war involving a planet-eating threat called Unicron.
It’s big, it’s loud, it’s fun, it’s Transformers, and it’s back.
