Who is the new Witcher actor? (Who is replacing Henry Cavill as Geralt?)
By WiC Staff
Season 3 of Netflix’s monster-hunting fantasy series The Witcher is almost upon us, and even by the show’s lofty standards, the anticipation is high. A big part of it is that season 3 will mark the last time that lead actor Henry Cavill will portray the titular witcher, Geralt of Rivia. Starting in season 4, Geralt will be played by a different actor, so the upcoming third season feels like the end of an era for the show.
If you’re curious who will be replacing Cavill as Geralt, you’re in the right place. We’ve had an answer to that question since it was first announced that Cavill was leaving The Witcher.
Who’s the new Witcher in season 4 of The Witcher?
Starting in season 4, Geralt of Rivia will be played by Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games). Netflix announced that Cavill was leaving the series at the same time that they confirmed Hemsworth would be taking up the white wig and silver sword, so we’ve had quite a bit of time to prepare ourselves for this change.
“As a Witcher fan I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia,” Hemsworth said at the time in a statement. “Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honoured that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure. Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character. I may have some big boots to fill, but I’m truly excited to be stepping into The Witcher world.”
Hemsworth was one of the actors who was under consideration to play Geralt back when the part was being cast the first time around. We’re excited to see what he brings to the part.
As of this writing, Netflix is just beginning to prep to film with Hemsworth. “We’re just about to start filming on season four with Liam Hemsworth and there will be a short gap then we go straight into season five,” casting director Sophie Holland recently told Deadline. Of course, with the WGA Hollywood writers’ strike still ongoing, it’s unclear how that will affect production on The Witcher season 4.
The Witcher season 3 volume 1 drops on Netflix on June 29, with volume 2 following on July 27.
