Why Peter Dinklage hasn’t watched House of the Dragon

Peter Dinklage played Tyrion Lannister on all eight seasons of Game of Thrones, and even among the show’s vast ensemble cast, he was a standout. Tyrion is a beloved character from George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire books, and Dinklage’s performance brought him to life with such panache that the actor took home four Emmys for his work.

So of course, we’re all curious about whether Dinklage has seen House of the Dragon, HBO’s shiny new Game of Thrones spinoff which premiered last year. Other Game of Thrones veterans like Emilia Clarke and Kit Harington have already chimed in on the matter. What about Dinklage?

Peter Dinklage needed “a dragon break” after Game of Thrones

While out promoting his new film Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, Dinklage revealed that like many of his former Thrones co-stars, he hasn’t seen House of the Dragon yet — but hopes to one day.

“I haven’t seen it yet,” Dinklage told ET Online. He clarified that his reluctance to watch has nothing to do with any negative feelings toward the show, or is even an intentional avoidance on his part. Rather, he has just needed “a dragon break” after playing Tyrion for a decade on Game of Thrones.

“I just did that show for a really long time,” Dinklage said, “And I watched some other stuff. [But] I intend to, definitely. I heard it’s really good.”

So if Dinklage hasn’t been watching House of the Dragon, what has he been watching? “I just watched a lot of Rick and Morty. I really loved Ozark and stuff like that.”

Not a dragon to be found in either of those, so fair enough.

Peter Dinklage will be the big villain in the newest Transformers movie

Just because Dinklage has needed a break from dragons doesn’t mean he’s avoiding genre roles, as evidenced by his upcoming turn as the villain Scourge in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. Scourge is the leader of the Terrorcons, who will serve as the primary antagonists in Rise of the Beasts.

Scourge is a voice acting role; we’ll never actually see Dinklage appear on screen in the film. “That’s part of the fun of doing a movie like this. With the vocal performances, all you have is the voice, so you really rely on finding the nuance,” Dinklage said. “With Steven [Caple Jr.], our director — who is incredible — he guided me through the whole thing while I’m in my lonely sound booth. I was in the flat iron district while everybody else was on set in Peru!”

"When you only have your voice, you um are less reliant on your bag of tricks, as an actor, which is fun. You actually find and sort of remind yourself how important your voice is."

Hear Peter Dinklage terrorize the Autobots in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, out in theaters on June 9.
