The Witcher is coming back! Netflix’s fantasy series, based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels and the video games by CD Projekt Red, has experienced a lot of ups and downs over the course of its short life. Will season 3 put it back on top, or confirm that the show wasn’t meant to play with the big boys?

Season 3 will once again feature Henry Cavill in the role of Geralt of Rivia, a taciturn monster hunter who finds himself swept up in the political machinations of kings, sorcerers and other power players ruling the Continent. Cavill has been consistently compelling in the role of Geralt, so it’ll be fun to see him back.

And we should enjoy it while it lasts, because season 3 will be the last time Cavill plays the role, even though Netflix plans to keep making at least another two seasons of The Witcher. Starting in season 4, Geralt will be played by Liam Hemsworth.

Henry Cavill leaves Witcher

It’s pretty unusual for a show to swap out the actor for the title character partway through, and we still don’t know exactly why Cavill is leaving. It’s possible he was upset with the way the show was increasingly straying from the source material, of which he is a fan. Perhaps it was a dispute over pay or something else to which we’re not privy.

But the bottom line is that Cavill is leaving, but not for another season. We still get to watch him grunt and slash his way through several new episodes.

For the first time, Netflix is releasing a new season of The Witcher in chunks. The first several episodes of season 3 will come out on June 29, and the back half will release on July 27.
