All 8 Game of Thrones season finales, ranked from worst to best
2) Season 4: The Children
“The Children,” the season 4 finale of Game of Thrones, is among the best of the best. It’s like a beautifully cooked stew, if you will, mixing together old storylines now reaching their satisfying conclusions with new ones just getting their simmer on.
The Children of the Forest pop up for the first time to lend a hand to our Bran and his friends, helping him reach the Three-Eyed Raven north of the Wall. And talk about emotional highs and lows: in addition to see Jon coming to terms with the heartbreaking death of Ygritte from the previous episode, Tyrion kills both Shae and Tywin Lannister before fleeing King’s Landing.
1) Season 6: The Winds Of Winter
The absolute best season finale of Game of Thrones is season 6’s “The Winds of Winter.” With an IMDB rating of 9.9, not only is this generally considered the top-notch finale, but it’s also hailed as one of the best episodes of the show overall. I have personally watched the episode over 20 times. I am not exaggerating.
Cersei, our resident queen of cunning plans and Tywin Lannister 2.0, is due to face the music at her trial in the Sept of Baelor. But what others don’t know or, in the case of poor Margaery Tyrell, don’t realize until it’s too late, is that she’s got one last jaw-dropping trick hidden up her royal sleeve. With a smirk that I one day hope to replicate on my own face as I watch my enemies perish under a green cloud of sulfer, she uses wildfire to reduce the Great Sept and everyone in it to smoky rubble.
The other factor that makes this such a good episode and finale is that Arya gets to scratch off Walder Frey from her to-kill list, much to the delight of fans everywhere. All in all, “The Winds Of Winter” cranks up the intensity of the series, weaves an intricate plot, and leaves you on the edge of your seat, craving more. I don’t know what went wrong after this episode, but the series finale doesn’t even hold a candle to this masterpiece.
