As anyone who has seen Game of Thrones knows, the show was definitely not created with the intention of being for younger audiences.

The show is rated TV-MA, which essentially means that it’s created to be viewed by adults and therefore may be unsuitable for children under 17. The TV-MA rating is often given to shows which contain graphic violence, explicit sexual activity, or crude indecent language. If you’ve seen Game of Thrones, you know the show contains all three which makes its TV-MA rating entirely justified.

It’s unlikely that anyone is eager to sit down and watch the show with their kids, but if one were to describe the show for kids what might be the simplest way to sum up the show so that a child could understand it? Well, we decided to task OpenAI’s generative chatbot ChatGPT with this very conundrum and the result was better than we could have ever expected.

We asked ChatGPT to explain Game of Thrones to kids

Turning to ChatGPT’s AI feature, we gave the system a simple prompt: Explain Game of Thrones to me as if I were five. We expected the AI to give us a toned-down version of the show. What we did not expect was just how it would go about explaining the show and the actions the characters take across the series:

"Game of Thrones is a story about many different families who live in a big make-believe world. They all want to be the king or queen of the whole world, but they have to fight and do tricky things to get there. There’s a big wall made of ice that protects the people in the land from scary creatures. Some of the families live in the cold place called Winterfell, and they’re called the Starks. They’re very brave and honorable. Then there’s a family called the Lannisters who live in a big city called King’s Landing. They have a lot of power and money, but they’re not always nice. One of the Lannisters, Cersei, wants to be the queen, and she does some not-so-nice things to stay in power. There are also other families, like the Targaryens, who have dragons and want to take back the throne. They used to rule a long time ago, but they were kicked out. Daenerys Targaryen is one of the important people from that family.Throughout the story, there are battles, magic, and people who change sides. Some people die, and it can be sad. The show is full of surprises and sometimes you don’t know who to trust. So, it’s basically a big adventure where everyone wants to be the ruler, and they fight and do sneaky things to get there."

A show where people die, everyone wants to be the ruler, and they fight and do sneaky things to get there? Well, that does about sum up the show in a roundabout way and absolutely simplifies the plot of the show in a kid-friendly manner. Add in that dash of dragons and magic, and you can call it a day!
