“No artists’ jobs were replaced” by using AI to create Secret Invasion credits

We’re living in a precarious time for creativity, one where previously super-complex and time-consuming tasks can be accomplished quickly and without cost by simply inputting some commands into an artificial intelligence (AI) program. We’ve seen novels, music and artwork get made effortlessly through AI, and now the Marvel Cinematic Universe has dabbled in it.

The power of AI was utilized in the opening credits of Marvel’s latest Disney+ show Secret Invasion, which follows Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) as he attempts to prevent an invasion of shape-shifting Skrull aliens. While the premiere of the series went down pretty well among fans, the opening credits did not. Disney has received myriad complaints criticizing the use of AI.

Many are worried that if AI can be used to create art in seconds, it negates the need to employ creative professionals. Disney using the technology for the biggest franchise in the world ruffled a lot of feathers.

Method Studios defends using AI to create the opening credits for Secret Invasion

Method Studios, the company behind the opening credits, responded to the complaints by saying that AI was only a tool in the creative process and reassured people that no jobs were replaced. “AI is just one tool among the array of tool sets our artists used. No artists’ jobs were replaced by incorporating these new tools; instead, they complemented and assisted our creative teams,” the studio told The Hollywood Reporter.

"The production process was highly collaborative and iterative, with a dedicated focus on this specific application of an AI toolset. It involved a tremendous effort by talented art directors, animators (proficient in both 2D and 3D), artists, and developers, who employed conventional techniques to craft all the other aspects of the project."

I think the issue now is how far studios are willing to take AI. Sure, it might begin with opening credits, so what’s next? Entire scripts? Is this merely the beginning?
