The Marvel Cinematic Universe was the biggest thing in movies for years. The DC Extended Universe, while it never reached those heights, has had some hits.

Then there’s Sony’s cinematic universe about Spider-Man villains who don’t actually fight Spider-Man. The two Venom movies were both pretty successful. Morbius was a bomb, and now we have Kraven the Hunter to look forward to:

And Sony intends to keep these movies coming. They’re also planning a movie about El Muerto, a luchador who wears a magical wrestling mask that grants him superpowers. His main beef is with a wrestling god named el Dorado, who killed his father, although he occasionally serves as an antagonist to Spider-Man. He’s more of an antihero than an outright villain.

Bad Bunny’s Spider-Man spinoff movie put on hold during writers strike

The lead characters of these movies were already getting increasingly obscure, and El Muerto is especially lacking in name recognition. That said, Sony was going to compensate by hiring phenomenally popular musician Bad Bunny to play him. But those plans may be put on hold.

Sony was originally planning to release the El Muerto movie on January 12 of 2024, but has since pulled the film from its schedule. According to Deadline, the ongoing Hollywood writers strike together with Bad Bunny’s touring schedule has made it difficult to move forward.

Does this mean the movie is dead? Not necessarily; we’ll see how and whether Hollywood gets back into gear whenever the writers strike ends; it’s been going on for nearly two months now. But don’t count on seeing Bad Bunny fight not-Spider-Man anytime in the near future.

Next. Daniel Radcliffe doesn’t think he’ll cameo in new Harry Potter series. dark
