Having first played Wolverine over two decades ago in X-Men (2000), Hugh Jackman is one of the longest-serving superhero actors of all time, and he’s not done yet. Despite hanging up his claws in Logan (2017), after a call from Kevin Feige and some encouragement from Ryan Reynolds, he’s on his way back for the MCU’s upcoming Deadpool 3!

I know what you’re thinking: Wolverine died in Logan, right? Yes, but the multiverse exists. The best thing about the multiverse is also the worst thing about the multiverse. On the one hand, there’s infinite possibilities. However, nothing really matters anymore; mortality is permanent until it isn’t. Plus, bringing back beloved characters is a great way for movie franchises to squeeze a bit more money out of audiences.

In Logan, director James Mangold gave the character a perfect, heartfelt farewell. It felt final, and it went down well with both fans and critics:

To see Wolverine jump back into action alongside Deadpool…well, some fans can’t help but see it as a betrayal of his Logan ending. Speaking to Variety, Mangold weighed in on what he thinks about Wolverine’s return to our screens:

"I can’t say that there’s a part of me that doesn’t wish that we’d let it be. But there was always going to be another Wolverine. There could be a baby Wolverine and a cartoon Wolverine. As much liquid as they can squeeze out of that rag, they’re going to try to. I don’t measure my success on a movie like Logan with whether we ended the conversation. I ended my conversation."

Hugh Jackman: Deadpool 3 happens before Logan

Of course, the third Deadpool movie deals with another Wolverine from across the vast multiverse, so a different variant of the character is totally plausible. According  to Jackman himself, the movie takes place in a pre-Logan timeline. “Basically, this is taking place… the story is pre-Logan,” he told CNN. “Which is, exactly as you said, where Logan died. So, we are pre that in the storyline.”

Deadpool 3 is still some time away. The movie is slated to release in November 2024.
