The Wheel of Time season 2 release date, cast, and everything we know so far
By Bryce Olin
We’re learning a lot more about The Wheel of Time season 2 as we get closer to the release date for the new season of the hit Amazon original series. Amazon just shared the new poster for season 2.
With the release of the poster and San Diego Comic Con 2023 starting on July 20, 2023, some fans of The Wheel of Time are convinced the trailer for the new season is coming soon. There was a panel for The Wheel of Time season 2 planned at SDCC, but it appears that the panel has been canceled because of the WGA and SAG strikes. It’s definitely possible that we could still see the new trailer soon, though.
It’s been a long wait for The Wheel of Time season 2. The first season of the series premiered on Nov. 19, 2021. The series was developed by Rafe Judkins. It’s based on the book series of the same name by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson.
We’ll update this story as new information becomes available. The latest update was published on July 14, 2023.
The Wheel of Time season 2 release date
The Wheel of Time season 2 premieres on Sept. 1, 2023. It appears that the new episodes will be released on Prime Video weekly, as Amazon does with The Boys, The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power, and a few other original shows.
It’s unclear right now if the first three episodes will be available to stream on September 1. That’s what happened with The Wheel of Time season 1, but I’m guessing that was just to get fans more invested in the series. Now that fans are invested, I don’t think we’ll see Amazon share more than one episode per week.
We’ll let you know more about The Wheel of Time season 2 release schedule as we find out more information.

Dónal Finn replaces Barney Harris as Mat Cauthon
There was one big recast from the first season. Barney Harris will not return as Mat Cauthon in The Wheel of Time season 2. It’s unclear why Harris did not return as Mat Cauthon, but the actor did not return to production following the COVID-19 delay, which may account for why he was largely absent from the final couple of episodes of season 1.
Dónal Finn will star as Mat Cauthon in the new season and likely future seasons of the series. The Wheel of Time season 3 is already filming, as of May 2023.

The Wheel of Time season 2 episode count and titles
There will be eight episodes in The Wheel of Time season 2, just like the first season of the hit Amazon original. So far, we only know one of the episode titles. We should learn the rest of the episode titles soon.
The Wheel of Time season 2, episode 1 is titled “A Taste of Solitude,” and it was written by Amanda Kate Shuman.
The Wheel of Time season 1 ending explained
The season finale of The Wheel of Time season 1, “The Eye of the World,” sees Moiraine and Rand, facing his first test as the Dragon Reborn against the Dark One. (Or is it just someone pretending to be the Dark One?) He tries to convince Rand to join the dark side, essentially. Rand resists this temptation, defeats the villain, and sets out on his own journey.
At the end of the season, Rand leaves, and he asks Moiraine to make his friends believe that he is dead. We can’t expect Rand to be away for long, but we’ll just have to wait and see how it all goes down.
At Fal Dara, Egwene and Nynaeve fight off waves of Trollocs by channeling the One Power. At the very end, we see a massive fleet of ships approaching. This is the Seanchan civilization, who will play a large role in the future of the series.
It’s also revealed that the Horn of Valere is stolen by Padin Fain. In season 2, we can expect characters to go after it.
The Wheel of Time season 2 panel at San Diego Comic Con 2023 canceled
The Wheel of Time fans were going to get to see the stars of the series up close during San Diego Comic Con 2023, but the panel has been canceled, according to Gizmodo. The WGA and SAG strikes are the reason of the cancellations.
I suspect we’ll be seeing a lot more cancellations coming in the days leading up to SDCC.
The Wheel of Time season 2 will combine The Great Hunt and The Dragon Reborn
The Wheel of Time season 2 will adapt events from The Great Hunt (book 2 of The Wheel of Time) and The Dragon Reborn (book 3).
The Wheel of Time season 3 is happening
The Wheel of Time has already been renewed for season 3. It’s happening! It’s hard to say where things stand production-wise with the writers strike, but in April 2023, it was confirmed that production on The Wheel of Time season 3 had begun.
Unfortunately, it’s too early to tell if The Wheel of Time season 3 production will be delayed because of the WGA and SAG strikes. We know production started in April, but we have not been able to verify if they delayed production because of the WGA strike or continued filming. There’s also been no clarification if the show will stop filming because of the SAG strike.
It’s possible, I guess, the show could continue filming like House of the Dragon. The British actors union, Equity, doesn’t allow its members to stop working in solidarity with SAG. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
How many seasons of The Wheel of Time will there be?
As of right now, there are three official seasons of The Wheel of Time confirmed. The first one was released in 2021 while season 2 is set to premiere in September 2023 and season 3 is in the works.
It looks like The Wheel of Time is set up to be an eight-season series on Amazon, if all goes according to Rafe Judkins’ plan that he mentioned at 2021 Comic-Con@Home:
"I sat down and broke out what I thought eight season of the show might look like before I started writing the pilot, because I felt like you have to build in this knowledge of where you’re going, of how you’re getting there, from the very beginning in order to tell the stories the best you can."
There’s already been a lot of challenges with production because of the COVID-19 pandemic. There is a writers’ strike going on in the summer of 2023. The DGA agreed to a new deal, but SAG is now on strike, which means the writers and the actors are now on strike.
We’ll just have to wait and see how it all plays out, but eight seasons appears to be the plan, as of 2021.
