The new season of Good Omens is “gentle and romantic”

Good Omens wasn’t originally meant to have a second season. The first season adapted the book of the same name by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, about an angel and a demon who befriend each other over thousands of years of being stationed on Earth. Gaiman and Pratchett tossed around ideas for a sequel, but Pratchett passed in 2015, so that seemed to be the end of that.

But now, Gaiman is forging ahead with a second season, based on the ideas he and Pratchett talked about. If what cast member Maggie Service told RadioTimes, there may be a third in the offing as well. “Where we end, I think, is so beautifully written because none of it’s tied up in a bow, none of it’s Hollywood magic,” she said. “It’s real within fantasy – and what is going to happen next?”

Service actually appeared in the first season of the show as Sister Theresa Garrulous. In the second season, she plays a new character named Maggie. “Neil Gaiman actually said that this season is gentle and romantic,” Service continued. “It’s totally the same tone but a different pace and we get to spend more time with characters and get to really properly know them. They, I think, get to know a little bit more about themselves because of the way others interact with them as well.”

David Tennant: Fans have “projected many things” onto the relationship between Crowley and Aziraphale in Good Omens

“Romantic” is a watchword for Good Omens fans, many of whom are invested in the idea that the angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and the demon Crowley (David Tennant) are together.

Is that what the authors actually intended? That’s unclear, but it may not matter. “I do think they help each other to understand each other, and the series is a sort of journey of them coming ever closer, through circumstance really,” Tennant said on The Radio Times Podcast. “I think what’s important for viewers going into series 2, is that many people have projected many things onto what that relationship is and I don’t want to second guess that by defining it. Because I may be seen to have some sort of defining knowledge of what that is. And I don’t know that I do.”

"So I think enjoy this wonderful creation that Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, these two characters that they conjured forth and just… there’s a joy to them interacting. It certainly is a joy to play, and hopefully is a joy to witness. Beyond that, define us as you will!"

So basically, if you want to keep those Crowley-Aziraphale fanfics coming, you have Tennant’s blessing.

Crowley isn’t “wanting to forgive” in Good Omens season 2

As for what actually happens in Good Omens season 2, it picks up with Crowley and Aziraphale as they’re adjusting to their new normal on Earth. After the events of season 1, they no longer have to report to heaven or hell and can just live their earth-bound lives, which isn’t always tidy.

“I mean Crowley’s living in the back of his car, which isn’t ideal,” Tennant told /Film, “but they’re bumping along, and they can spend time together with less of the threat of being told off for it.”

The plot gets moving when the angel Gabriel, played by Jon Hamm, shows up in Aziraphale’s book store, having completely lost his memories. “I mean he’s the grit in the oyster there, because I think they’ve just about managed to figure out a way of existing separately and together without their head offices ruling their lives,” Tennant said.

"The absence of heaven and hell has actually been quite a good thing for them on the whole. So to have Gabriel revisiting is a bit of a disaster. Especially — I mean, he did try to discorporate Aziraphale and that Aziraphale was actually Crowley at the time — and that’s not something Crowley’s wanting to forgive."

Michael Sheen: Aziraphale and Crowley are “like a married couple”

As for Sheen, he says that Aziraphale and Crowley are “like a married couple” whose lives are interrupted by the arrival of this amnesiac former nemesis. “They suddenly have this person who’s dependent on them,” he said. “It was a brilliant idea to have Gabriel suddenly show up with apparently no memory of who he is and to have them have to look after him and deal with him.”

"For a character like Aziraphale, who frets and worries, stresses, and gets exasperated, to have a character who just is totally exasperating that he has to look after was just a very rich area to explore."

Good Omens season 2 premieres on Amazon prime Video on July 28.
