Before the SAG-AFTRA strike, Sam Heughan spoke to TV Insider about the American Revolutionary War about to break out on Outlander. It’s time for history!

Unfortunately for Heughan’s character, Jamie Fraser, the war means fighting on the opposite side of his biological son William (Charles Vandervaart). While the Frasers are fighting on the winning side, William is on the side of the British. Claire (Caitriona Balfe), Jamie, and Young Ian (John Hunter Bell) know the actual outcome of the war since Claire has time traveled here from the future, but they still have to go through the motions and absolutely cannot interfere with history.

We’ve all watched Back to the Future and know how disastrously that can turn out, so despite William being on the losing side, Jamie has to let things be as they are.

Sam Heughan talks the Revolutionary War and changing history on Outlander

“They are in the eye of the storm. It’s the biggest hurricane they’ve ever met. The War of Independence,” Heughan said. “They’re trying to maneuver themselves strategically between different sides.”

That maneuvering is probably one of the hardest things they have had to do. Yes, they’ve fought in other wars (recall the Battle of Culloden and Battle at Alamance), but this one is different. As we saw in last week’s episode, “Singapore,” Jamie’s efforts to protect Fort Ticonderoga fall on deaf ears, and they all have to flee due to the British overtaking it.

“They’re trying to protect their family, the people that they care for, most of the people that Jamie is responsible for,” Heughan said. “It’s overwhelming.”

This season of Outlander feels more stressful than ever. One minor change to the past could have catastrophic consequences for the future, and I can’t look away.

Outlander airs new episodes every Friday on STARZ.
