There may be still be “missing” Doctor Who episodes out there

Apparently, there might be “missing” episodes of Doctor Who still out there in the Whoniverse! According to the head of TV archive Kaleidoscope, these missing episodes exist in private collections.
During the sci-fi show’s first six years, the BBC made 253 episodes, of which 97 are still lost in their original form. This is due to the BBC’s policy of junking archive programming between 1967-1968.
Because of this policy, many of the First Doctor’s (William Hartnell) and the Second Doctor’s (Patrick Troughton) space adventures are missing or remain incomplete. As a Whovian, this revelation makes me sad!
Some Doctor Who episodes may be “missing” or in private collections
Speaking to RadioTimes.com, Kaleidoscope CEO Chris Perry revealed that it is “very likely” that more lost episodes will emerge over time.
“We know where there is missing Doctor Who out there but the owners won’t return it at the moment,” Perry said. “Every year we find 50-70 lost programmes, some famous titles and internationally known names and others not, but significant examples of regional television output, for example.”
If you did not know, Kaleidoscope’s mission is to recover and restore lost archival TV. Recently, they recovered missing episodes of Jim Henson’s 1980s series Fraggle Rock. Different versions of this show aired in other countries, and it was believed that the British versions were wiped back in the 1990s. However, Kaleidoscope recovered and placed those lost versions into archives.
Given their success in recovering lost episodes, I have a sneaking suspicion that they will be victorious in finding those missing Doctor Who episodes sooner or later. There have been rumors of so many out there, and I can only imagine how exciting it would be to see some of them.
Here’s hoping that Kaleidoscope can locate those episodes and perhaps, one day, reveal them to Whovians worldwide!
