George A. Romero’s estate is moving forward with final Living Dead movie
By Ashley Hurst
Thanks to his seminal “of the Dead” movies, George A. Romero has cemented himself as one of the most influential filmmakers ever. Back in Night of the Living Dead (1968), Romero basically invented the modern ‘zombie’ as we know it. He made five sequels between 1978 and 2009, eventually passing away of cancer in 2017. Before that, Romero was quietly working on one final movie, titled Twilight of the Dead, which is now moving forward into development!
We’ve known about Twilight of the Dead for some time. The movie is based on a treatment Romero wrote. It has been further developed by his wife Suzanne Romero. “We had a solid treatment and the beginning of the script,” she previously told The Hollywood Reporter. “I can 100 percent say that George would be incredibly happy to see this continue. He wanted this to be his final stamp on the zombie genre.”
Producer Suzanne Romero recently told Deadline that the zombie movie could begin filming as soon as this year. “I’m delighted to be joining forces with Roundtable to bring the eerie evolution of Romero’s universe to the screen,” she said. “Roundtable impressed me with their long-term and deep love of George’s work. I believe they have the vision to produce the best version of this movie that honors the Romero legacy. I can’t wait to start filming!”
The big problem? Well as we all know, there are the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, which have ground filming on almost every major project to a halt. Apparently, the Living Dead team is looking at ways to mitigate issues. “They are applying for an interim agreement,” the Deadline article reads.
What will Twilight of the Dead be about?
Written by Joe Knetter, Robert Lucas, and Paolo Zelati using the treatment from Romero, the plot of Romero’s seventh and final zombie movie is currently under wraps. So far, we understand that it is set on a tropical island and will “delve into the dark nature of humanity from the perspective of the last humans on earth who are caught between factions of the undead.”
Like all other Romero films, it’s said to have deep sociopolitical meaning. All of his zombie movies have underlying social commentary; Dawn of the Dead is about consumerism, for instance.
Twilight of the Dead doesn’t have a release date yet, but if it does move into production this year, there’s a chance we could see it premiere sometime in 2024.
