Last week, Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot gave DCEU fans a bit of hope by saying that Wonder Woman 3, which was previously believed to be dead following James Gunn and Peter Safran’s reorganization of the DC film universe, was still getting made after all. “I love portraying Wonder Woman,” Gadot said. “It’s so close to and dear to my heart. From what I heard from James and from Peter is that we’re gonna develop a Wonder Woman 3 together.”

But this is the DCEU, and confusing back-and-forth is the name of the game. Last night headlines broke from both Variety and Collider which refute Gadot’s statements. According to both outlets’ sources, Wonder Woman 3 is “not currently in development at DC Studios.” They report that the only Wonder Woman project which DC Studios has in the pipeline at the moment is the Max prequel series Paradise Lost, which is set to be the first Wonder Woman-centric outing for the new DCU.

Someone needs to throw the Lasso of Truth at DC Studios

I can’t be the only one who’s getting flashbacks to last year, when Henry Cavill was teased to return to the DCU as Superman only for things to devolve into a confusing morass of contradictory stories until James Gunn admitted that Cavill had been “dicked around.” At this point it’s becoming clear that unless something is outright announced by Gunn or Safran, we probably need to take it with a grain of salt.

Even then, Gadot made a pretty convincing case that Wonder Woman 3 was still on; she says that it was Safran and Gunn she heard that from. “I was invited to a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran,” Gadot told Flaunt Magazine, “and what they told me, and I’m quoting: ‘You’re in the best hands. We’re going to develop Wonder Woman 3 with you. [We] love you as Wonder Woman— you’ve got nothing to worry about.’ So time will tell.”

So on the one hand we have Gadot saying she was told the movie is still on; on the other we have multiple outlets with inside sources at the studio saying they were told it’s not in development. And all this is before we even take into account that DC Studios parted ways with Wonder Woman and Wonder Woman 1984 director Patty Jenkins last year.

If only the Lasso of Truth was a real thing we could just toss over this whole situation, to find out what exactly is going on. Since it’s not, it’s safest to assume that Paradise Lost will be the next Wonder Woman project unless we get some kind of official confirmation otherwise from DC Studios. And maybe not even then.

dark. Next. Ben Affleck’s axed Batman movie would’ve been “f***king awesome”
