The Wheel of Time cast spills new season 2 details and spoilers!
By Daniel Roman
Nynaeve is a “bit of a walking contradiction” in The Wheel of Time
Rotten Tomatoes also spoke with Nynaeve actor Zoë Robins, and once again the intriguing details were plentiful. Robins talked quite a bit about different parts of Nynaeve’s character that she got to play in season 2. Nynaeve has a reputation for being one of the most stubborn characters in The Wheel of Time, but there’s much more going on beneath the surface — which is part of why she’s such a beloved character with many book readers.
Robins said that Nynaeve “doesn’t suffer fools” and is resistant to changing in her own stubborn way. But tapping into the more sensitive side of the character was also a joy for the actor in season 2.
"I think what’s been wonderful to play with in season 2 is more of her vulnerability. She can come across as very assertive and strong in her convictions, which she is, but she’s also just like jelly underneath and she cares so much about the people she loves. She would do absolutely anything for them. So I think it’s been wonderful to play with this stone-faced, fierce character, and also delve deep into her heart."
As you might guess, Nynaeve’s convictions often lead to her butting heads with other characters, including some of the Aes Sedai. Robins said Nynaeve most respects someone who “tells it like it is,” which rules out characters like Moiraine, whom we saw her often clash with in season 1. “Moiraine is not that person at all, so that’s something that Nynaeve absolutely can’t handle,” Robins added.
Nynaeve will have “intense” scenes with Liandrin in The Wheel of Time season 2
So who might Nynaeve be trusting in season 2? Well, we don’t know if Nynaeve will trust Liandrin, an Aes Sedai of the Red Ajah, but it sounds like Zoë Robins trusts the actor that plays her, Kate Fleetwood, completely. Robins revealed that she and Fleetwood share some “intense” scenes this season.
“Kate is someone who is just like completely opposite to Liandrin, which is so funny. She is so warm and engaging and giving and loving,” Robins said. “She’s been a massive support person for me on set.”
"As you say, we’ve had to do some really intense scenes together and that requires a lot of trust. I one hundred percent trust her. I think there’s just a generosity that’s required to get to a level of play and openness and excitement that I share when I’m doing scenes with Kate. And she always gives that. We’ve been given the joy of playing some really interesting characters that have a very distinct relationship. And I think we’ve both been so excited by that prospect. So yeah, we’ve both leaned into that."
Mat Cauthon actor Dónal Finn also sang Kate Fleetwood’s praises during our own interview with him, so at this point we know Liandrin will share scenes with both Nynaeve and Mat. It sounds like Fleetwood will be getting plenty of love in season 2!
Robins’ interview ended with a final tease, where the actor revealed that Episode 3 is her favorite of The Wheel of Time’s second season. We’ll be able to see that one right on premiere day, so it won’t be long before we know why!
