Let’s dreamcast Max’s new Harry Potter TV show
Cillian Murphy as…Lord Voldemort
We all know the acting prowess of Cillian Murphy; whether he’s playing the lead role in Peaky Blinders or the title role in Oppenheimer, this guy brings it every time.
For Voldemort, the clear comparison is Murphy’s role as Dr. Jonathon Crane, aka the Scarecrow, in Christopher Nolan’s Batman movies. He knows how to pull off a character who seems in control but is really unhinged, which describes Voldemort perfectly. More importantly, I think Murphy can expand on Ralph Feinnes’ portrayal in the original Harry Potter movies, exploring new things about the character through his performance.
In a lot of ways, Voldemort is a very solitary character, since most of his supporters are loyal to him only out of fear. He also doesn’t even truly believe in the pure blood ideology that he spouts. Murphy could lean into Voldemort’s isolation and get us to look at him in a new way.
Kate Fleetwood as…Bellatrix Lestrange
Although Kate Fleetwood had a minor role in Deathly Hallows Part 1 as Mary Cattermole, the lady who unknowingly makes out with Ron in the Ministry of Magic, she has grown into an actress I think is capable of playing Bellatrix Lestrange, Voldemort’s most fanatically faithful lieutenant. This is not an easy task, as Helena Bonham Carter played this part to perfection in the original movies. But if you need to be convinced of Fleetwood’s talent, check out her performance as the uncompromising Aes Sedai sorceress Liandrin on Amazon’s The Wheel of Time. She can definitely tap into the wicked mania that Bellatrix Lestrange is known for.
I think Fleetwood could play this sadistic part well. Bellatrix is there for much of the destructive chaos that follows Voldemort’s return about midway through the series. Perhaps the person Bellatrix torments the most is Harry himself, as she is responsible for killing Sirius Black and Dobby the house elf, two people very near and dear to the young wizard.
