With One Piece, Netflix did the near-impossible: make a live-action version of an anime series that is actually pretty good. The show manages to preserve the cartoonish intensity of Eiichiro Oda’s original manga, as well as the hugely popular anime. Much credit must go to the incredibly dedicated cast and crew.

Wanna see how dedicated they are? Check out some of the behind-the-scenes features showing off their stuntwork, including these two that spotlight a fight scene from the premiere episode:

As director Marc Jobst pointed out, one of the reasons that this fight scene was able to feature so many long, unbroken takes was because the cast members — including Iñaki Godoy as Monkey D. Luffy, Emily Rudd as Nami, and Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro — were willing and able to do a lot of the fighting themselves, which meant the team didn’t have to cut away whenever the stunt doubles were subbed in. At times it looked like the cast members were explaining things to the stunt doubles:

Even on a show as cartoony as One Piece, the cast and crew is dedicated to practical effects

Mark Jobst has been posting quite a few behind-the-scenes videos. Here’s one of Godoy and Rudd on a huge crane being lowered into the courtyard before the big fight scene in the premiere:

It’s not just the stunt team that’s working hard. Give it up for the wig team:

Jobst, like everyone who watched the show, is a huge fan of the deranged pirate Buggy the Clown. Jobst showed off the a model of Buggy’s big top tent…

…as well as what I imagine is a few prop Buggy heads.

When a guy can detach his body parts at will, you probably need to have a few of these lying around:

We still don’t know if Netflix will give us a second season of One Piece. But I think a lot of people would like to see more of this cast and crew at work.
