Mike Flanagan has made a name himself as Netflix’s go-to guy for scary shows, starting with The Haunting of Hill House and running through The Haunting Of Bly ManorMidnight Mass, and The Midnight Club. He’s now taking his talents to Amazon Prime Video, but before he goes, he has one more spooky treat for fans: The Fall of the House of Usher, loosely based on the famous short story by Edgar Allen Poe.

Emphasis on the “loosely” here. This version is set in the modern day and revolves around a wealthy family about to be ruined on account of all the terrible things they’ve done running their pharmaceutical company. Watch the trailer below:

The Fall of the House of Usher stars Carla Gugino, Bruce Greenwood, Mary McDonnell, Carl Lumbly, Mark Hamill, Rahul Kohli, Kate Siegel, Samantha Sloyan and T’Nia Miller.

The Fall of the House of Usher looks a little more zany than horrific

It’s interesting to tease out the influences in this trailer. Obviously it takes some cues from Edgar Allen Poe, but not just The Fall of the House of Usher. There’s a raven, there’s a pendulum, someone says “nevermore”…you get the picture. It’s a Poe free-for-all.

There’s also a healthy dose of Succession, what with all the horrible rich people cracking wise about their situation. And I don’t get much horror from the trailer, more a zany energy I associate with the Knives Out movies. And finally, there’s more overt creepy-crawly, ooey-gooey energy than you’ll find in any of Poe’s stories; it kind of gives me American Horror Story.

We can see how it all comes together when The Fall of the House of Usher comes out on Netflix on October 12.
