Ships and cities at night on the House of the Dragon season 2 set

House of the Dragon Episode 7
House of the Dragon Episode 7

Filming on the second season of House of the Dragon continues…but not for much longer. Word is that HBO will be done with principal photography by the end of September. That may not include rewrites and reshoots, which could be difficult to do with writers on strike. But we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it, eh?

For now, there are still some interesting reports coming in. For instance, Redanian Intelligence has it that the show is shooting night scenes in the backlots at Leavesden Studios in England, where most of the filming is happening behind closed doors. First up, they’re shooting a night scene featuring a giant ship they’ve built on the backlot. You can see the ship in UnBoxPhd’s drone video tour of the set:

Corlys Velaryon heads up the seafaring Velaryon family on House of the Dragon, and we’re expecting to see a conflict on the open water at some point in season 2, so there should be plenty of opportunity to use that ship set.

RI also brings word of another night shoot involving the City Watch of King’s Landing, known as the gold cloaks, near one of the gates to the city. They also have a photo of King Aegon’s golden dragon banner hanging next to the gates of the Red Keep.

House of the Dragon season 2 rumors

Although, that’s all the stuff we have photographic proof for. Now it’s time to turn to the fun stuff: rumors from Twitter.

Specifically, these reports come from @housethedragons, which I don’t and trust as well as Redanian Intelligence but are still worth a look. According to them, the season 2 premiere will feature a scene where Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) sneaks into King’s Landing in a fishing boat and talks with some gold cloaks.

I can buy this. Remember: Daemon created the gold cloaks way back in the series premiere, and many remain loyal to him. Plus, in order for the show to set up some major plot points from George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, Daemon will have to make contact with a certain someone in King’s Landing, even if the notion of him sneaking back into the city while he’s fighting a war against the king in the Red Keep is a little hard to believe.

@housethedragons also reports that the seventh episode of House of the Dragon season 2 will have a scene where a village is burned at night. That might be related to the night shoots the cast and crew are doing lately. We’ll know more when the new episodes finally premiere on HBO and Max sometime in 2024.
