Emma D’Arcy writes profile in praise of the trailblazing Bella Ramsey
By Daniel Roman
Here’s a wholesome story for you. Emma D’Arcy and Bella Ramsey are two stars on the rise; D’Arcy is currently playing Rhaenyra Targaryen on House of the Dragon while Ramsey has blown up as Ellie on The Last of Us. But before Ramsey was in HBO’s new zombie drama, they made an impression as the young Lady Lyanna Mormont in the final three seasons of Game of Thrones.
These two were paired up a while back for a fun joint interview. Now D’Arcy has penned a blurb about Ramsey for Time Magazine’s 100Next list for 2023, which highlights emerging leaders in various fields from entertainment to sports and business. Read on for what D’Arcy had to say about her fellow actor:
Emma D’Arcy: Bella Ramsey is a “radical force for change within film and TV”
"When I think of Bella Ramsey, the phrase that comes to mind is radical honesty. Onscreen and off, their remarkable power is in an outright refusal of pretense or persona, choosing instead the riskier path: candor, generosity, and the bravery to be. The result is a formidable actor, and one of the most charming people you could meet.Bella’s captivating screen presence has been undeniable from the start. Their first professional acting gig, seen by millions, was met with universal acclaim. Bella was only 11.In the eight years since, they’ve become an inspiring figure in the LGBTQIA+ community, a radical force for change within film and TV, and were even nominated for an Emmy. Through it all, they maintained their grounded humility and exquisite, dry humor. As a nonbinary person starting out as an actor, I feared there wasn’t space for me in the mainstream industry. Young trans and gender-nonconforming people coming into film and TV today will know that there is indeed space, in no small part because of Bella."
D’Arcy’s statement is wonderful. It’s great to see an older actor support a younger one like this, and obviously we love to see fellow citizens of the Seven Kingdoms get each other’s backs. Given how much D’Arcy has talked about their experience as a nonbinary person navigating a career as an actor, it’s powerful to see them write about how Bella Ramsey is opening the field for other people in the LGBTQIA+ community.
Here’s hoping we see much more of Ramsey and D’Arcy in the years ahead. Ramsey is next slated to appear in The Last of Us season 2, which is currently on pause due to the Hollywood labor strikes. Meanwhile, D’Arcy is still filming House of the Dragon season 2, which is expected to air on HBO and Max sometime in 2024.
