Do Rand and Elayne get together in The Wheel of Time?

In the season 2 finale of The Wheel of Time, Rand is hurt after his friend Mat accidentally gores him with a spear (oops). As he lies on the ground, bleeding out, he is saved by the arrival of Elayne Trakand, an Aes Sedai novice and friend of Egwene. Elayne uses the One Power to heal Rand. While that happens, we get a shot of Elayne from Rand’s perspective, and it seems like he’s having a love-at-first-sight kind of moment.

Or maybe he’s just light-headed from the loss of blood. In any case, The Wheel of Time showrunner Rafe Judkins talked to ScreenRant about this moment, comparing Rand to Prince Eric from the 1989 Disney movie The Little Mermaid, who also looks up dazed at a beautiful woman who saves his life.

“We really wanted to flag for the audience that this is a relationship to pay attention to,” Judkins said. “So having her heal him of this wound that can’t be healed is a way to cement right away for the audience, ‘These two have a connection to each other, and I’m paying attention to what’s going on with the two of them.’ The way he sees her, the way that she comes into the scene, it all hopefully is signaling to an audience that’s not familiar with the books that there’s something to really pay attention to there — because there is.”

Indeed, in The Wheel of Time books, Rand and Elayne do develop a relationship. We can tell you more, but know that there are SPOILERS ahead.

Who does Rand marry in The Wheel of Time?

In The Wheel of Time books by Robert (and finished by Brandon Sanderson), Rand and Elayne eventually get married…but there’s a complication. Rand actually marries three people: Elayne, Aviendha and Min.

We’ve met all three of these characters on the show. Elayne is the Andoran princess played by Ceara Coveney, Aviendha an Aiel warrior played by Ayoola Smart, and Min a seer played by Kae Alexander. So far, only Rand and Elayne have interacted.

In the books, Rand falls in love with all three women, and they are all okay with him being married to all three of them. We don’t know if the show will adapt this part faithfully. Honestly, polygamy might be a bridge too far for Amazon. But that is what happens in the books.

The third season of The Wheel of Time is in production and will hopefully premiere in 2024, although it may get pushed into 2025.
