Lord Mooton reportedly cast for House of the Dragon season 2
By Daniel Roman
House of the Dragon season 2 has officially wrapped filming, but our watch continues for updates. Over the past few months we’ve heard about many new faces who will be joining HBO’s acclaimed Game of Thrones prequel for its second season, from Lord Cregan Stark to the dragonseed Ulf White and more. Today we’ve got another one: according to reliable fansite Redanian Intelligence, Irish actor Turlough Convery will be joining the series as Lord Mooton. Allegiances are forming as the Dance of the Dragons gets underway!
Redanian Intelligence is pretty reliable when it comes to these sorts of casting scoops, but we have to give the usual disclaimer to take it with a grain of salt until we hear something official from HBO. Interestingly, the casting scoop from RI doesn’t specify which Lord Mooton Convery is playing. Beware SPOILERS for George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood below.
Who is Lord Mooton in House of the Dragon?
There are two Lord Mootons who are relevant to the Dance of the Dragons: Lord Walys Mooton and his brother Manfryd, who becomes the new Lord of Maidenpool after Walys is killed by a dragon. Both of them are supporters of Rhaenyra Targaryen…at least at first.
Following the devastating Battle at Rook’s Rest, King Aegon’s dragon Sunfyre takes a wound which leaves it grounded for a time. Seeing this as a great opportunity to kill a dragon and get into Queen Rhaenyra’s good graces, Lord Walys Mooton tries to kill the injured Sunfyre while it’s vulnerable. It doesn’t go well.
After that, Manfryd becomes the new Lord Mooton and continues being a staunch ally to Rhaenyra. However, late in the Dance of the Dragons when Rhaenyra’s control on the situation is slipping, she commands him to commit an act which violates guest right (think Walder Frey), and it drives a wedge between them. After that, Manfryd lowers the flag of the blacks and raises one in support of King Aegon and the greens instead.
Convery is best known for roles in Sanditon and Netflix’s recent Resident Evil show. In the latter, he played a crass villain with a lot of personality; it was the sort of role I could see being good demo reel material for Lord Walys specifically. Out of the two Mootons, Walys is the one I’m banking on seeing Convery play, as opposed to his younger brother Lord Manfryd.
Hopefully we find out more details soon! Until then, our watch continues for more updates about House of the Dragon season 2.
