The latest episode of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, “Deux Amours,” explained how Daryl ended up in France. And while we were learning that, we got a tiny cameo from Carol (Melissa McBride), who Daryl managed to briefly speak to on the radio.

Sure, this wasn’t the huge role for Carol fans were hoping for. Back when the show was being developed, McBride was originally slated for a larger part, but she ultimately dropped out. Nevertheless, we’ll take whatever we can get. When the two chat, they greet each other and catch up a little, but then Carol hints that someone “came back.” Before Daryl hears a name, the radio cuts out.

Naturally, people are already jumping to conclusions about who (or what) returned to the Commonwealth. Dwight and Sherry, perhaps? We know that those two return to the Sanctuary in the final season of Fear The Walking Dead. Or possibly even Rick and Michonne, who will both return for their own spinoff show in 2024.

Clearly, this is a mystery that’s going to hang over the franchise for some time. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, showrunner David Zabel explained a little more about what Carol’s cameo means for the future of her story. “Well, it is important to what her ongoing story may be, and it is important in terms of what we were thinking is going on in Carol’s world at that moment.”

"It’s also not what the audience expects or anticipates, if they’re anticipating something. So it will ultimately prove to be surprising. But that’s all based on the idea that we’re going to play out that story."

This suggests that the TWD Universe is not done with Carol’s story yet. “You’ll have to watch and see, but we love the character and we want to keep her in the world of the show,” Zabel teased.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season finale is “jaw-dropping”

We already know that Daryl Dixon is returning for another season, so the season 1 finale won’t tie up all loose ends. But Zabel is confident that the upcoming finale will satisfy fans. “I’m so proud of the season finale,” he said. “The season finale has it all. It has drama, it has tenderness, it has intense action, it has heroism, it has difficult moral choices.”

"So it’s a full payoff to the larger story of this epic journey through France, but it’s also a full payoff to the intimate story of Daryl as this reluctant hero trying to just get back home. And it ends with a couple of moments that are pretty jaw-dropping."

The season finale of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon airs on Sunday, October 15 on AMC!
