5. Game of Thrones season 5

  • Audience Score: 90%
  • Critics Score: 93%

Game of Thrones season 5 is another good season, but it’s not quite top-tier compared to some of the early seasons of the show. In the fifth season, Dany gets stuck in Meereen, but she is visited by a new ally from afar, Tyrion Lannister, who escapes King’s Landing and the rest of the family after he kills his father. In the North, Jon becomes the leader of the Night’s Watch, welcomes the wildlings to the other side of the Wall, and eventually meets his doom at the hands of his own men in the season 5 finale. Elsewhere, Arya travels to Braavos to become an assassin, while Sansa hangs out with Petyr Baelish in the Vale before returning to Winterfell, where the Boltons are in power.

Season 5 is the first season since season 1 with a Rotten Tomatoes average score below 96%, which is a testament to how good the early seasons of the series are. Overall, though, season 5 is not bad by any means. There are some elements I find quite boring in hindsight, especially regarding the stories of Arya, Dany, and Jon. I also hated the High Sparrow and the religious turn the series took in the fifth season. It’s just not what I wanted to see.
